Carbon Removal Forum 2022: Focus on Soil Carbon Measurement

The Carbon Removal Forum is the second in a series of campus-wide events to harness knowledge and capacity toward developing an Iowa State University program in agriculturally-based carbon removal that could contribute toward mitigating climate change. This year's forum will be held virtually on April 22, 2022.

This forum is focused on measuring soil carbon. Iowa farmers have long known and highly valued the organic matter content of their soils. Approximately 50% of this organic matter is carbon. The need to accurately and efficiently quantify soil carbon is increasing dramatically, driven by new carbon market opportunities and recognition of the value of soil health and soil carbon in the face of increasing climate extremes. New technologies are emerging to meet these soil carbon measurement needs, and there are established technologies which can be improved and standardized.
