Areas of Interest:

Dr. Bazylinski's major research interest involves biogeochemical cycling of inorganic and organic compounds by diverse types of bacteria in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Current research in this lab is mainly focused on the biogeochemical cycling of carbon, sulfur, iron and hydrogen and the biomineralization of magnetic minerals by marine magnetotactic bacteria (procaryotic organisms whose swimming direction is affected by the Earth's magnetic field). Physiological, biochemical and chemical, genetic and molecular approaches are all used in the investigation of these important processes. Other projects include the bioremedication of oil components and the desulfurization of sulfur-containing organics by marine bacteria and the microbial control of livestock waste.
