This project grew out of a desire to technically evaluate corn stoves and corn furnaces to supply accurate and unbiased information to the manufacturers and the public. However, further information was needed. Therefore, the project team developed a project evaluation/development phase to further understand existing testing, certification, and availability of public information that may ultimately lead to a solid-fuel fired appliance test program that will result in technically accurate, unbiased, and legally sound information that can be made available to the public.
The practices and procedures employed by numerous industries will be evaluated to determine if there are meritorious features that could be implemented in a corn stove evaluation program. Additionally, the wood stove industry has been well established for many years. In fact, the proliferation of wood stoves resulted in the Environmental Protection Agency promulgating test procedures and certification standards. It is anticipated that most procedures and standards utilized for wood stoves will be applicable to corn stoves.
